I have just received my cheque or for my funding this year and I just want to say I don’t know where I would be without box legals backing and support. That past 2 years have been hard with injury and without the money and support offered I wouldn’t of been able to afford any of the physio that I have been having. With this money I have finally got my injury sorted and now it is hard work from here to achieve everything I want to in the next 12 months.
Tom Guy first began running in 2005 when he started High school. He took part in a number of cross country races, and after winning, was encouraged to go to Northwood Stadium to train with the Stoke AC athletes club.
He started the 2006 season on the track. His favourite distance was the 1500 metres but he also enjoyed the sprints. At under 15 level he won most of his local races at 1500 m and crowned the seasons achievements by qualifying for the national AAA’s final, competing against boys most of whom were older than himself. In his second year running at the same level, he again won all his local races and was selected to compete in the UK Schools games. Tom came eighth in his heat and failed to make the final. He was devastated. The last race of the season however gave him the chance he needed to turn his fortunes around. He ran the 800 m in the Young Athletes League and won the race.
In his first year as an under 17 level he continued to run at shorter distance and he was again selected for the UK Schools games. This time he not only got to the final but won the race convincingly. He went on to win the National AAA’s, getting his personal best (pb) time down to 1.53.58.
Last year (2009) was again a good year for Tom, winning the UK Schools title in a new pb of 1.53.07 and beating the Stoke AC record for the 800m in the process. If that wasn’t enough he also won the 400m in a time of 48.9 seconds.
Tom has gone on to represent England in Home Nations Competition, finishing second last year (2009) and first this year (2010). He is currently in the middle of the cross country season, and whilst not enjoying this as much as he used to, he knows it will help in the coming track season.
